Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee never gave a lot of importance to the position, but to ideals. He devoted his life to ideals : J P Nadda

BJP National President JP Nadda addresses Jan Sabha on the birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee :

  • In 1937, as vice-chancellor, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee invited Rabindranath Tagore to address the convocation ceremony and asked him to deliver his address in Bengali. This was the first time when a major address at a convocation ceremony took place in an Indian language.
  • He became the youngest vice-chancellor of Calcutta University in 1934 at a mere age of 33. He left an imprint at this post.
  • Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee became the finance minister in 1941, and resigned in 1942. He never gave a lot of importance to the position, but to ideals. He devoted his life to ideals.
  • It was clear that he resigned due to the appeasement politics that was going on in Bengal. He knew that Muslim League was trying to take Bengal as a part of Pakistan. He is one of the leading forces that helped India retain Bengal.
  • Dr Mookherji fought the Bengal famine in 1943 with everything he had and served the people tirelessly day and night. He was made the President of the Relief Committee. His words and care for the poor and needy left a deep imprint in Bengal.
  • He was a non-Congress minister in the Nehru cabinet on the invite of Gandhi ji. He was made the first Commerce & Industry minister of India.
  • When his ideals didn’t match, he resigned. The Nehru-Liaquat Ali pact made him resign because the pact was cheating on the minorities in Pakistan.
  • He had said of Nehru – ‘The appeasement politics you’ve started in India won’t help the nation. It would not save the minorities in Pakistan.’ Nehru, after this, had to stop the plan to give electoral reservation based on religion.
