While fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, Bengal witnessed a super cyclone Amphan, the fiercest storm in our recent memory.
From the destruction of dwelling houses and physical infrastructure to disruption of fisheries and agriculture, the devastation has been unprecedented.
However, through the resilience of Bengal and its people, along with a determined effort by GoWB machinery, we have been able to kickstart major relief and rehabilitation work for the distressed, with an immediate announcement of a ₹6250 Cr package as first tranche.
I’m happy to share that GoWB has transferred funds to nearly 5L affected people for repairing their homes, released crop damage assistance to 23.3L farmers, apart from 2L betel farmers.
We’ve released ₹1444 Cr so far, against an initial estimate of ₹1350 Cr.
Electricity, water and essential services be normalized urgently. Do not wish to share horrendous sufferings inputs from various parts of Kolkata and outside.
This is no time to engage in tall claims @MamataOfficial in media. Need of hour is to engage in relief on ground.
The situation would not have been so frightening if instead of politics, attention was paid to preparation at the right time.
Scenes of senior ministers in public spat and MLA’s public thrashing are a depiction of the actual situation.
There must be end to blame game and finding scapegoats.
Attention also be focused on rural areas where the situation continues to be frightening. These areas cannot be neglected.
Urge @MamataOfficial to update me on the situation as expected under constitution
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited the state of West Bengal to review the situation arising out of Cyclone Amphan. He was accompanied on the visit by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Ministers of State Babul Supriyo, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Debasree Chaudhuri.
Accompanied by the Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankharand Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Prime Minister undertook an aerial survey of the cyclone affected districts of West Bengal.
Excerpts of PM Modi’s address on the situation in the wake of Cyclone Amphan :
My thoughts are with all those who have lost their lives due to the cyclone. Centre and State are working together to provide all possible help to people. With the Governor and CM, an aerial survey was done. They have also briefed me on the prevailing situation.
All aspects relating to rehabilitation, reconstruction will be addressed. We all want West Bengal to move ahead. Centre will always stand with West Bengal in these testing times.
We are battling a pandemic on one hand and there is a cyclone situation in some parts. Dealing with the pandemic requires social distancing whereas battling the cyclone requires people to move to safer areas.
Despite these contradictions, West Bengal is fighting well. We are all with West Bengal in these adverse times.
Rs. 1000 crore advance assurance will be given to West Bengal.
Rs. 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of the persons deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the persons who got seriously injured due to the cyclone in parts of West Bengal.
Today, I visited Min. of Earth Sciences to monitor the situation virtually in the eastern states of India, where Super Cyclone Amphan just made a landfall.
Madhavan Rajeevan, Secretary, MOES, briefed me about the severity of Amphan and how India Met Dept is issuing consistent warnings for appropriate preparedness.
Comparison of the forecasted and actual track of Cyclone Amphan shows forecast has turned out to be accurate, indicating that the prediction of rainfall, wind & tidal wave has also been correct.
This has increased the confidence of disaster management authorities.
South and North 24 Parganas and East Medinipur districts will witness two spells of high-speed winds and heavy rainfall, due to passage of both rear and front sectors of Cyclone Amphan, with around 30 minutes interval.
After crossing Sunderbans, Cyclone Amphan is expected to pass near Kolkata.
110 – 120 kmph wind speed is expected in Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts of West Bengal.
