Hera Panchami~ is an interesting and important traditional ritual performed during the Rath Yatra celebrations: Dharmendra Pradhan

Dharmendra Pradhan – Union Minister:

  • Hera Panchami~ is an interesting and important traditional ritual performed during the Rath Yatra celebrations. Legend has it that Goddess Lakshmi awaiting the return of Mahaprabhu Jagannath to the Sri Mandir decides to visit him at the Gundicha Temple on the 5th day.
  • On this day, Ma Lakshmi the principal goddess of the Sri Jagannath Temple is carried on a ‘Bimana’~a decorated palki with great fervour and festivities to the Gundicha Temple.
  • Entering the Gundicha Temple during the Sandhya Dhupa, Ma Lakshmi receives an Agyan Mala from Mahaprabhu, a garland of consent to return soon.
  • Incensed by the ignorance of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Ma Lakshmi decides to leave for Sri Jagannath Temple. Feeling insulted she vents her ire by asking the servitors to damage a portion of the Nandighosha Rath, the chariot of Lord Jagannath.
  • On the concluding day of the 9-day sojourn is Niladri Bije, time for the trinity of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra to enter the Sri Mandir.
  • Irate and sullen, Ma Lakshmi refuses to open the doors of the Sri Mandir for Lord Jagannath. To appease Ma Lakshmi, Mahaprabhu Jagannath offers her rasagola bhog to persuade her to allow him inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  • Hera Panchmi is a centuries old tradition and one among the many sacred rituals of the Rath Yatra festival.
  • Although, the Rath Yatra is all about Lord Jagannath, the celebrations is inconceivable without the presence of Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Jai Jagannath.
