Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray’s speech at the launch of Mavala,’ the biggest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in India which will undertake tunnel boring work for the Coastal Road Project in Mumbai;
This is a historic moment and an achievement that gives us great happiness and joy.
In 2012-13 and perhaps even before that, the concept of a Coastal Road for Mumbai was being discussed.
In the elections held during that period and otherwise, I had given a presentation about this project.
This was a new concept. Some doubted if this is even possible. People asked if this road could go through the sea or be constructed as an extension of the Bandra-Worli sea link.
Today, I am proud and happy that the MCGM worked on the project, ensured superb planning and started work with great enthusiasm.
When things had grounded to a halt in the Corona-pandemic induced lockdown, the pace of work on the project did not slow down.
Considering the manner in which work is underway, I am confident that the Coastal Road will be completed before the deadline.
This tunnel being dug by the Mavala TBM will start from the Priyadarshini Park, and will pass underground, from below Malabar Hill, Girgaon Chowpatty and reach the Princess Street flyover.
When work on the tunnel begins under the Girgaon Chowpatty, Mumbaikars will not even realise this.
During the term of the Coalition Govt. from 1995 to 1999, 55 flyovers were built in Mumbai. This was the need of the hour. But now, these flyovers cannot tackle rising traffic.
This Coastal Road route will help people from the suburbs come to the city bypassing the central areas of Mumbai.
We have a beautiful seashore and this will be a picturesque journey. The beach will also stay unaffected.
The MCGM Municipal Commissioner has shown how officials can work efficiently. You, Ashwini Bhide ji and the police worked hard round-the-clock to control the Corona pandemic. This battle is now under our control.
Let me proudly assure you that my MCGM will ensure that the people of my Mumbai get the best civic amenities and services using the best technologies in the world.
I am sure this Coastal Road will be completed soon and be available for the service of Mumbaikars.
Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra!
