Hardeep Singh Puri – Union Minister:
I was chairing a WTO dispute panel in Geneva when a delegate asked how my daughter Himayani in New York was as WTC had been attacked.
Died a hundred deaths till she called me & Lakshmi M Puri in Budapest to say she was safe.
She worked in WFC building with a skywalk to WTC & witnessed the downing of both towers before running down 29 flights of steps on to the streets to miraculously escape.
For years she would get nightmares – of towers collapsing, people falling to their death from the sky.
The rest, as they say, is history. Many innocent people lost their lives that day. I join the world in paying homage to their memory.
It was on this day the US & other Western democracies woke up to terrorism as their problem & a global menace; not just other people’s problem.
Later, as the Chairman of the United Nations Security Council Counter Terrorism Committee, we passed zero tolerance norm towards such acts of mindless violence, regardless of their motivation.
On this anniversary of 9/11, let the world pledge to fight terrorism unitedly & support India’s fight against cross border terror in a volatile neighbourhood.
