Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change :
India has nearly 60% of wild Asian elephants not just because of strong wildlife laws, but because we Indians revere, are more tolerant & affectionate towards animals.
On this World Elephant Day 2020, let us reaffirm this bond of coexistence with Haathi Hamaara Saathi.
It is estimated that Human Elephant Conflict results in loss of lives in the ratio of 5:1 respectively every year.
Besides crop insurance etc., the govt. is working on robust & lasting solutions to minimize Human-Elephant Conflict.
The very first elephant reserve was the Singhbhum Elephant Reserve in 2001 in the newly formed state of Jharkhand. Today we have 30 Elephant reserves, covering an area of around 65,000 sqkm in 14 states.PIB
